   Jean Scheurer
At one and the same time painter, drawer and sculptor, Jean Scheurer is a committed artist. After the end of his studies and a two-years trip round the world, he tries to knock over the art of his town, creating the group Impact. Impressed by the German and Dutch constructivists and the concrete art of he Swiss artists Max Bill, Thomas Lohse or Arthur Honegger, he is interested, at the beginning by sculpture made of plexiglas before heading towards painting and geometric abstraction.

In what painting is concerned the artist is challenging the line. He is stating it on all tunings. Placed side by side in an infinite series with close or wider intervals, the lines create cadences like musical phrases. Strongly coloured, they sing, dance, fan the ardour of the eye like hypnotized by unexpected effects.
It is the art of the artist who is drawing the gattention of the spectator on changing paths, because not only color fields alternate with coloured lines, but also certain of them, slightly oblique, change the rythms of the work, accelerating or holding it back. It is a subtle game to which the specator undergoes, carried far away from the fields of the canvas.

The paintings of Jean Scheurer create an effect of continuity, a musicality, here and there expertly interrupted by monochromic fields, - like crotched-rests -, then the impulse is taking off again and is hurrying towards other flights of times. In this spirit, the artist is having a sort of permanent body fight with the line, imposing to it his rigour and the pertinence of his vision. However, the line, sometimes fluctuating, oblique, is giving character and personality to the work.

The line, - infinite according to its very fact -, is taking us in the most distant countries of the imaginary. And although its asserted trace rarely deviates from the charateristic rigour of the artist, the work puzzles and interpellates properly because of the few aside steps disturbing the order of things, creating altogether rythm, musicality, tension, rigour, but also irony, poetry, lyrism, coloured high glee. A wonderful experience that should not be missed !
